This is a City Learning Point online training series
If you work in a Minnesota city or local government and you supervise others, Human Resources Basics for Managers is for you! You will learn the basics of human resources to help you navigate employment laws and effectively lead your staff. All the laws, examples, and exercises in this training apply specifically to Minnesota cities. We gathered extensive input from city directors, managers, and supervisors throughout the state representing a variety of city departments.
Intended audience:
Fee: $30 for League members or $60 for non-members per person for each course, with group discounts available (see more details at right).

Supervisors in local government face unique challenges. This is true whether you were promoted from within, recently changed careers, or are well-established in your current role. This course will help you understand supervisory roles, styles, and responsibilities. As a supervisor, you are in a unique position to help create a work environment where employees are enabled to perform to the best of their ability. This course will introduce you to the Performance Management Cycle, a tool to guide you through the process of setting expectations, coaching, documenting, and evaluating employee performance. You will practice skills to better manage your most valuable workplace assets . . . your employees! (This course is approved for one POST credit.)

In order to be successful, supervisors must build effective teams. A big part of building a successful team involves choosing the right team members in the first place. This course will help you effectively gather information to improve your evaluation of candidates while avoiding legal pitfalls. (This course is approved for one POST credit.)
